At first glance, chipmunks and squirrels may seem like close cousins, and in many ways, they are. But when it comes to pest control and protecting your home, knowing which one you’re dealing with makes all the difference.
Chipmunks are small (about 5–6 inches long) with distinct stripes running down their backs and faces. They tend to stay close to the ground, digging burrows and tunnels in yards and gardens.
Squirrels, on the other hand, are much larger (up to 20 inches with their bushy tails), don’t have facial stripes, and are often found climbing trees, roofs, and attics.
Chipmunks cause damage primarily underground, weakening soil, foundations, and landscaping with their tunnels. They may also raid gardens and bird feeders.
Squirrels are notorious for chewing through siding, vents, and wires as they make their way into attics to build nests. Their chewing habits can even create fire hazards if they damage electrical wiring.
Since chipmunks and squirrels create different problems, treatment strategies vary. Chipmunk control often focuses on burrow management and exclusion, while squirrel control involves sealing entry points and humane removal from attics and crawl spaces.
